Muna noticed it immediately. She looked at him carefully.
“Is everything okay?” she asked.
Chibuike did not answer. He just looked at her. His face was serious.
Muna’s heart started to feel uneasy.
“Chibuike, what is wrong?” she asked again.
Still, he said nothing. Then slowly he stood up. He moved to her side. And then he went down on one knee.
Muna froze. Her eyes widened. Her hands went to her mouth. She could not believe what she was seeing. Chibuike looked up at her and said, “Muna, will you marry me?”
Silence filled the place. Muna’s eyes filled with tears. She could not even speak at first. Then she finally said, “Yes, yes, I will.”
Her voice shook with happiness. That night became one of the most important nights of their lives.
Months passed and then their wedding day came. It was big. People from everywhere came. The whole city talked about it. It was even shown on TV. But not everyone was happy.
Somewhere far away, Azuka was sitting alone. She was watching the wedding on television. She saw Muna. She saw Chibuike. She saw everything. Her face changed slowly. Her eyes became heavy. She remembered everything she had done, everything she had said, everything she had caused. Now it was too late.
She whispered to herself, “I lost him.”
And for the first time, she felt the weight of her own actions.
